In today’s fast-paced world where everyone is always busy, tension and stress are at times inevitable! But there’s a silver lining to it too, and it is the fact that we have as many ways and mediums to take a pause, sit back, relax and burst that stress bubble. Taking time to calm down once in a while is nowadays as important as work and sometimes perhaps even more critical than work.
So in this post, I am going to share with you some easy ways which can help you relax, disconnect from your tensions and get back to your happy, healthy, calmer self. I know sometimes when I am frustrated it takes a huge effort to even get up from the bed let alone do any of these things. You might just want to sleep, sit in a corner do nothing and just sulk about how bad life is. But trust me all it takes is a single spark of will, to do something you like and get your mood better. So let’s begin!
1. Deep Breathing
Let’s start with the easiest one that would take no effort. You would know when your day is getting bad cause you will start feeling that awful vibe. And that’s the very moment when you should start taking these steps before things get out of control. If you google ‘breathing exercises for calming down’ you’ll find a ton! Regulating your breathing and reducing your heart rate is the best way to find calmness and tranquility no matter the situation. If you don’t want to do some Exercise just start taking deep breaths and focus on your breathing. You can also use the ‘4 7 8’ technique! Basically, inhale for 4 seconds, hold it in for 7 seconds and breath out slowly for 8 seconds! (Tip: Ditch your phone when you do that)
2. Laugh Out Loud
Once you have your breathing regulated, as the next step you can watch some funny Videos to cheer you up. I truly believe that laughter is the best medicine! This works even better if you have some old funny Videos of your friends, family, pets saved up for crisis situations like this. They can instantly make you smile and put you in a better mood. Alternatively, if you have a pet you can take him out for a walk and have some fun time too or meet your friends with the funny bones and just Laugh Out Loud!
This is pretty simple. Play the kind of music you like. It can be ocean sounds, affirmations or maybe just your favorite guilty pleasure playlist. If you are a party person play some party songs and groove to it for a while. If you love Coke Studio kinda music, sit back and listen to few of those songs. Putting on some tunes can help you chill you out and calm you down!
Wherever you are, in office, at home, commuting somewhere. This one can be a life savior, it at least is for me. Those 3 minutes of making the perfect tea that I like and just sitting down sipping on it, doing nothing or doing whatever you like to do while having your tea is a perfect unwinding option. You can also explore the teas specifically made for reducing stress and anxiety. For me personally, the good old Masala Chai works best. It warms me up and puts me in a cozy, calming state of mind.
5. Scents/ Essentials Oils
Smell is one of the body’s strongest senses, and I like to use scents, perfumes, essential oils! A little bit of peppermint oil on the temples helps with a headache or some drops of lavender essential oil in a hot bath. These little guys are lifesavers and really help to relax you. If I am on the go/ in office and can’t just sit back and relax with my favorite essential oil in the diffuser. I like to use the Perfume Oil I always carry in my handbag and just put it on my wrists and temples and enjoy the aroma.
Stepping away and basically removing yourself from a stressful situation is one of the best ways to chill. Go for a walk, go for a shower or maybe go shopping basically just anything but the tense situation. Take in some silence, connect with nature and regroup! Sometimes changing your clothes and getting into Loungewear or adding a bit of makeup to perk yourself up also helps. Just a few minutes can make all the difference, trust me.
We all deal with anxiety and stress in different ways. This list has all the stuff that generally works for me! You can also look back and take hints from your past to see what works better for you, and then accordingly make a specific plan of your own to bounce back. Something like “If I am feeling frustrated, then I am going to eat my favorite snack meal “Chole Bhature” while listening to my favorite perk me up song “New Rules by Dua Lipa” and then I am going to stay away from anything and everyone for 15 mins to recharge myself!” I would love to hear what you guys do to get your zen on!
